Godzilla Minus One VS Godzilla x Kong
Easily one of the most significant stories to come out of the Oscar weekend was Godzilla Minus One winning Best Visual Effects. It is the first time the behemoth has managed to grab one of the film industry’s most prized gongs in that category in the franchise’s history. And social media was right to be excited about it. The award was the perfect way to end Minus One’s record-breaking theater run while launching Godzilla’s 70th anniversary extravaganza. Nevertheless, the party is far from over with the highly anticipated arrival of the powerhouse movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire this month. Ahead of the debut of that epic motion picture, Minus One’s director, Takashi Yamazaki, and Godzilla x Kong’s director, Adam Wingard, have come together to celebrate the King of the Monsters.
In a social media post collaboration with Godzilla × Kong and Toho’s Godzilla, it was revealed on Monday that the two beloved genre directors had joined IMAX for an exclusive interview to discuss all things Godzilla. Along with the information, a photograph of Yamazaki and Wingard holding their Godzilla model toys was given in the announcement. Just the image of them may push any kaiju fan’s heart to race, but their radiant expressions will transport you back to your first monster brawl.
Godzilla Minus One Continues to Make History
Whether you are a long-time fan or have only been introduced to this lovable behemoth through the Legendary series, Godzilla has reached its prime. It may have taken 70 years and nearly 40 movies to get here, but the original groundbreaking Japanese Toho series and the U.S. counterpart, each in their own way, are working hand-in-hand to remind viewers of Godzilla’s pop culture crown. When the critically acclaimed Minus One hit the U.S. last December, audiences caused a sensation: the human characters were excellent and played with brutal, raw emotions; the film brought the franchise back to its original roots and typical horror, while the groundbreaking action scenes took the series to its first Oscar nomination and win.
That amazing accolade will go along with the movie’s eight Japanese Academy Awards (including Best Picture). That praise also helped this kaiju to make bank at the box office with a record-breaking $106 million worldwide. Then, when we look at the current state of the American series, Wingard completely turned the trajectory of Godzilla around. In the direct aftermath of the great box office success of Godzilla vs Kong, Godzilla now has to team up with his former greatest enemy to defeat one of Kong’s fatal descendants. Wingard, like Yamazaki, has a keen sense of the grandiose. The brawls in Godzilla vs Kong are already legend, The New Empire is looking to raise the massive stacks even higher. With the goodwill of Minus One behind it and the recently well-received Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series, the skies are the limit to what Godzilla x Kong can do at the box office.
